Hugh Cowperthwaite

Hugh Cowperthwaite has been involved in the fishing industry since high school in a variety of ways. Whether through ensuring there are fishing access points up and down the coast, diving for sea urchins, or working as a sternman, he knows and cares a lot about the ocean. He has initiated over $3 million in funds for fisheries, aquaculture and working waterfront programs in his role at Coastal Enterprises Inc.. Mr. Cowperthwaite grew up in Maine and left for only two years in his entire life but came back because he, “missed the ocean too much.” Listen to the personal experiences, good times as well as challenging, that he has faced in the fishing industry over the past thirty years.
Interview and story by Karli Jo Clark at Harpswell Coastal Academy, 2016, in collaboration with the Holbrook Community Foundation and Galen Koch.
